About the Project

Angels of Purification is a community project set up by Becky (aka Wulfhidr) and Gav (aka Cap’n) to help fight back against the negative attitudes and abuse that women in the wargaming, specifically Warhammer, community receives on an almost daily basis. Becky and Gav are also coordinating a community Angels of Purification army, donated and painted by volunteers, to be auctioned off for charity. Angels of Purification is an entirely female Space Marine chapter, created by members of the Warhammer community.

Becky on why she started “Angels of Purification:

When I first started in the hobby, my models were criticised for being “too good”, there was no way I would be able to paint something to that standard, I must’ve got my husband to paint them for me. I’ve also received comments on why I have chosen to go with Necrons, why am I painting X model in Y colours. Now if a man had presented these, he wouldn’t get these questions. He would be praised – I know because I have seen it.

Women in the hobby are seemingly always having to justify their choices. To the point where I know that many of them have stopped posting their hobby content, due to the fear or having to spend another day justifying themselves and the decisions that they have made.

More recently people (majority women) have started creating female Space Marines. Now this has caused such outrage that people have had to lock their accounts, because they keep receiving abuse from it. You mention fem Space Marines and you have a whole hoard of people descend on you screeching about “the lore”.

So, as a community we decided to stand up and take action. We’ve had enough. I’ve had enough. We all know that Games Workshop are willing to change and bend the lore, however, there is not a big enough cry. So, we decided to go big. We create a chapter, we create an army, we create a codex, we create the audience. We do something so huge that Games Workshop can’t help but stop and notice.

At the time of writing this there are currently 80 people (including myself) who have volunteered to paint and donate models for the army (or armies at this point). There are countless others, including the wonderful folx at No More Damsels, working and supporting behind the scenes.

We are still looking for people to volunteer to paint models as well as to donate any spare bits that they might have laying around. If you do feel like you can help, please do get in touch!

Get Involved

There are still volunteer slots for painting and the project is always looking for people to donate models and/or model bits. If you would like to help support the Angels of Purification project, you can contact Becky on Twitter or contact us and we’ll help you get in touch. To see the progress of the project, follow #angelsofpurification on Twitter and Instagram.

If you’d like to start your own Angels of Purification army, information on colour scheme and chapter markings are available on our Army Details page. This will be updated as the project grows.

Becky (or Wulfhildr)

I’m a fairly new face to the wargaming scene, having only started collecting and painting models since 2018, even if my backlog suggests longer, and sharing my progress on social media since 2019! However, my enthusiasm for the hobby is huge and I have been involved in many meetups and been to Warhammer World more times than I can count. Whilst I’m still getting to grips with the lore and the rules on how to play, I absolutely love the painting side and I’m forever watching the latest tutorial to improve and better my painting.

Gav (Or The Cap’n)

I picked up TTG hobbies back in primary school, reading Fighting Fantasy books before discovering fantasy miniatures of various makes and then when it released, Warhammer 40K. Mostly as a miniature painter collector than a gamer, I had my hand in GW until around 2006 and got back into 40K in 2014. With my return came a renewed vigour to gaming as well as painting. I enjoy playing the specialist games, as much as the mainstream and I am champing at the bit to get a game of 9th Ed in. In 2019 I took part in my first RP over Text (discord) and looking forward to doing more RPG.
